War Plum / Baron Sempill II

WAR PLUM / BARON SEMPILL

Built for the Shipping Controller by Charles Hill and Sons, Bristol and launched as War Plum during December 1918. She was a 2498 ton triple expansion steamer with a service speed of 10.5 knots. Her engine was built and supplied by W. Simons and Co. Ltd., Renfrew. She was managed on behalf of the Shipping Controller by Gillespie and Nicol.
During November 1919 she was purchased y The Kelvin Shipping Co. Ltd. (H. Hogarth and Sons) and renamed Baron Sempill. She is shown as such in this photograph and it looks as though a later built Hogarth vessel is astern of her. Can anyone identify the second vessel?
In 1934 she was sold to A. H. Smith, London who then sold her on that same years to the USSR where she was renamed Ussuri.
In 1959 she was deleted from Lloyds Register owing to lack of current information.

very nostalgic evocative photo Stuart thanks for posting. Photo appears to be taken
in a US port probably a Gulf Port. To me the ship astern, while it could be as you say another Baron, but I rather doubt it, it looks to have a darker diamond shape on the funnel with an lighter coloured insignia inside. The name appears to be only one word rather than two
Hope this helps
