Yes Tony I agree with you great picture.Whitehead was stopped berthing on the jetty due to her weight,I also did a couple of trips on her early 80s working on the Rona Range for six weeks and every night we used to anchor off The Tail Of The Bank just under the Murchison Mermorial Balmacara.
I notice Her 3D booms Andy. We had them on Whimbrel but not Hydraulic all Handraulic, a nightmare to rig a nightmare to deploy and a nightmare to recover. Also trying to deploy the Torpedo launching frame the same. I think Whitehead had a single tube?.
Yes that's correct Tony they also used to deploy from the ships side on some shoots these type of torpedo run off otto fuel and they had no way of getting rid of the gasses that were present in the tube. The 3D booms were also a pain on Whitehead and a massive work up to deploy.Looked good but never seen them deployed.
Regards,
Andy.
Hi Chadburn,Whitehead was fitted with 2xPaxman diesels with a bhp of 93400,she was sold for scrapping on the 1/6/1993 she layed at Devonport Naval Base at Carew Point Trot with an Indian crew onboard for sometime. She then sailed under her own power to India where she meet her final fate of the hands of the cutting torch.
Regards,
Andy,
Thank you for the info Andy, still looking at it I think that she has a superb profile, I presume it was scrapped when her usefulness ended and she could not be converted to do anything else, a bit of a shame really she look's better than some of the "ugly Duckling's" that are in use today.
