My Dad and I lived on our own for some time during my teens Goblin Hamburgers in gravy and Fray Bentos pies made regular and welcome appearances on our menu.
Yesterday in Makro(wholesaler)I saw cases of the pies at ÂŁ1 a go,for one lovely minute I was reminded of our teas together and thought of buying some for the pub. Then commonsense prevailed.
Fray Bentos pies not appalling. Not so of the puddings.

Perhaps the answer to the question posted many years ago about why ships flour had a different taste, was that it had been pre-treated by the tiny little feet of the ships cockroaches foraging on the weavels in the year old flour (Eat)
My wife can actually smell if a cockroach has been anywhere near food and throws it away - comes of being brought up in Taiwan - did you ever wonder why the locals in any country never get ill eating the food?

Cockroaches used to live on the freezer door heated seals and make trips in to the freezer to do their shopping.

On one ship I asked the Chief Steward (was it One-egg Williams?) about the cockys. "There are no Cockroaches on this ship" With that one crawled up the bar bulkhead. Splat!! he killed it "well there aren't any now" he said with a perfectly straight face.

Well you needed some shortening on the winch cylinder before making a good chapatti.

(Bentley's figured in my London blow-out as they do unseafood as well so I can entertain my family and friends who weirdly like seafood while I have a decent steak).

Well, three of the ladies (two family, one of the friends) had lobster. Evidently 7 (was to have been 9) is too much for their normal booking and I had to reserve 'an event'. I have never been an event before. With fizz it came out at a little over GBP 110 a head - can't be bad. I made to add a tip to the bill but was advised "I wouldn't bother, it will just disappear", extraordinary.
