Does anyone recall an incident when above was bringing back to UK yacht Sceptre which competed in the America Cup. Story has it that the supporting cradle collapsed in really bad weather and the yacht fell and was damaged when hitting a vent. She had to divert to Halifax to secure everything. This would have been late in 1958 I think.

I was on Mawana in that same Atlantic storm and heard the radio traffic. We were well south of the Manipur. It appears that Sceptre is still maintained by her own society.

This off http://www.sceptre1958.co.uk/1958-the-17th-americas-cup.html
Sceptre returned home in October, aboard the freighter Manipur which unfortunately ran into a gale, during which the yacht’s cradle broke. Sceptre fell against a ventilation pipe, damaging her hull and a hatch, and putting her future in some doubt. This event is remembered by Andrew Parks:

She was stowed in a cradle on our after deck. Not surprisingly, the cradle was very high and there were beams right across Sceptre's deck whereby she was secured downwards to the ship. However, when Manipur rolled heavily in the storm after leaving New York it became evident that the cradle was not adequate for such sideways stresses and one side collapsed. Sceptre fell across the deck onto a ventilator and her bow was damaged. When we diverted to Halifax Nova Scotia to have Sceptre re-secured it made TV news here in Britain.

Just finished Andrew Parks' book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Just-Simple-Seaman-Andrew-Parks/dp/1467013943

He was cadet on Manipur and describes the struggle with Sceptre - he took part in the recovery when she broke out of her cradle.
I enjoyed the book and am sad to reach the end - so many characters from Brocks days as well as the vivid account of the life of a deck apprentice.
