Whats the story with that unfeasably ugly rear end?

With her superstructure so considerably enlarged from its original form these sponsons were required to be fitted.

How do the sponsons interact with the increased mass of the superstructure? Is it a matter of lowering center of gravity or otherwise?

If there was an increase of superstructure then the "G" would rise (more weight added higher up), lowering the "GM".
By adding sponsons like this the Water Plane Area is increased, which results in a rise of BM, effectively rising the Meticentric height and therefore inceasing the "GM" and improving the stability offsetting the added weight high up.

Something like that i seem to remember.
