Aden, in South Yemen, at the southern end of the Red Sea, was originally established as a coaling station when steam took over from sail and the Suez canal had opened.
Later on it was regular stop en-route to/from the UK to take on bunkers and water. It was also a great place to buy cheap cameras, transistor radios etc. ashore at Steamer Point. Bum boats also came out to the ships and sold underwear, flip flops, watches and so on. The goods came up and the money went down in a bucket on a rope.
Happy days,
