Liberian crude oil tanker Al-Malik Saud al-Awal anchored off Tenerife on 04th Nov., 1966, months after she suffered an explosion at the engine room in June, when loading a full cargo of crude oil at La Salina, Venezuela. She was towed to Tenerife refinery by the Polish ocean tug Jantar, to discharge about 25.000 tons of crude. Then, once ended the discharge, towed to Hamburg in December that same year.

When I was 3/O in the Red Sea I called her on the aldis - by the time she had flashed the name I was totally confused.

Hello Old Janner and capkelly! Yes, the huge blast was (probably) caused by a fire in the engine room, that killed eight crewmember and injured six more.

Not sure, but guess the name Al-Malik Saud al-Awal does mean something like "King Saud the First".
