Aquitania and Olympic

Stephen and I posted a series of photographs taken by Percy Loomis Sperr back in December of 2019 showing Olympic and Aquitania departing New York as seen here: https://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/1219853/title/aquitania26amp-3b-olympi/cat/all Stephen mentioned that the series ended with a shot of the two liners seen from the stern heading down the Hudson, and this is that image. 1934 would be the worst year for Olympic in her life, in addition to ramming and sinking the Nantucket Lightship (LV-117) killing seven of her eleven-man crew, she would also operate in the red to the tune of 14,600 British Pounds. I've often wondered if this was the reason she was withdrawn from service the following year, of if she wasn't considered for further service because her 22 knot speed wouldn't be in keeping with the soon to be completed Queen Mary. Hopefully someone of SN knows the answer why she left after only 24 years of service, she just a had a major overhaul in 1932, and she was still in top notch condition when she was sent for scrap.

Clyde,
his
Big OOPS! I did find more information on the event of these ships. They were not both OUTBOUND froum New York!

The OLYMPIC has just ARRIVED at NY. The berth was not available so OLYMPIC came up river and she has been turned to stem the tide. Note all tugs standing-by. "Practical Navigation for Officers of the Watch", no doubt to take into account the new lingo!h The in series of photos, the AQUITANIA has backed out the piers and she is shown heading down to the Narrows. Once AQUITANIA was clear of the berth, OLYMPIC was turned and put into the berth. Sorry, I should have edited the photo before.

Hi Stephen, is this picture then part of that original series by Sperr? It looks like both ships are departing from the city in this view.

Yes, there were four (or might be five) photos of this event, all by Sperr. Taken from a small vessel and came up the river. Olympic was sitting there and he went past the ship. Caught Aquitania as she backed out and then turned and went down river. I have one, you have one. Ken Marschall has one and Ken said he has seen one of the others.
