Aquitania

Aquitania

Aquitania is shown docked at Woolloomooloo in Sydney in December, 1945. The ship had just returned Australian troops to their homeland, and she will sail on the 10th of that month with a load of returning British troops as well as more than 1000 civilians who had been unable to leave Sydney following the outbreak of the War back in September, 1939. Although the ship’s armament had been removed by this time, she still hasn’t had the railing around her fantail replaced, and the large bundles of scramble netting still hang along her sides.

This picture appears in "Running the Gauntlet" labeled as a wartime troopship shot...the funnels & the ensign are a dead giveaway as is the lack of guns on the stern. There is a picture of her taken from that Illustrious class carrier I have somewhere I will try and dig it out.

[COLOR="Navy"]One of her wartime 'passengers' was a dear pal of mine who came 'over here', the UK, in '44 on her in her troopship days from his Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. He was 95 yesterday, 2nd October and is still going strong. Has just written and had published a book of poems to add to his published autobiography

[COLOR="Red"]Art Schmitz, an American World War II veteran born and raised in Milwaukee, tells the story of his time in the war. Including the introduction and the prologue, this story covers a time span of better than fourteen years, from approximately 1932 to 1946. ... Google Books
