I remember Bailey Controls well on the Axina & Anadara the automatic bit never seemed to work properly, we used to refer to them as 'handamatic', On working on some 70's built vlcc's & ulcc's they worked fairly faultlessly.
Your right David about the Bailey controls not working very well on the Axina. I sailed on her and they were only partly automatic. After I left Shell I worked for 30 years for Bailey Meters. Only then did I understand why they never worked too well. Its a long story but put simply the systems were a cut down cheaper version built to Shells specs.
During manoeuvring we simply put FD on hand and wound it up a bit!
If you went to work for Bailey's, then you might have been involved with the Regent Pembroke. We had a terrible time with an early version of the solid state Bailey Controls system on that turbine vessel. As R/O I was nearly worked to death handling all the messages between the manufacturer's men on board and their guys ashore as they tried to get things working. Go knows how the guys down gelow coped. We only had the Chief (Dennis d'Souza) and 3 engineers plus Indian crew. They all must have worked like slaves to keep things running.

Hello Rob
I had nothing to do with the Regent Pembroke, fortunately it would seem. But I was on plenty of other vessels that were problem ships. So many of them were just sauna baths filled with mechanics. Do you have any other details of the Regent ship?
Regards!
