Brave Challenger, any idea on this one?

Brave Challenger,
A MILLIONAIRE has thrown the future of a hovercraft museum into doubt after buying its two main attractions.
Forking out more than £500,000 for the Princess Anne and Princess Margaret hovercraft, based at Lee-on-the-Solent. Their engines are similar to those on his yacht, Brave Challenger.
The 103ft boat is one of the world's fastest but has been moored for several months at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth,
Bosses at the Hovercraft Museum, which did not own the hovercraft and was just allowed to house them for Hoverspeed, fear the cross-Channel vessels will now be broken up for their parts

They would be Rolls Royce Proteus Gas Turbines. I imagine that they are quite scarce now but probably well shot if they have come from those two old hovercraft!

An ex hoverspeed friend told me he had only bought the spares for the hovercraft but was hoping to get them seaworthy again. He is trying to get hold of turbines for this boat, which allegedly does 60 knots!

Surely "Brave Challenger" is not an ex RN Brave Class?
For that matter wht happened to Scimitar, Cutlass and Sabre? Scrap I suppose? At least they were proper fast craft not like the current "Attacker" class - which are glorified motor boats.

Scimitar, Sabre and Cutlass were all sold onto Greek owners, probably became private yachts. I know Scimitar became the Greek "Aquilon" and Sabre became "El Condor"

This was definately not ex RN but was built to order for Stavros Niarchos - obviously too much money in his pockets!

Was built as Mercury for Niarchos. Recognised good British engineering, good for impressing the dollies!

Now owned by a Company who intends to replace the G.T's with refurbished one's (ex Hovercraft), she has I believe a CODOG type engineroom, a much pampered vessel which at one time was kept in a covered wet dock under a previous owner who caused/allowed some confusion in regards to whether she was an ex R.N. hull or not, she is not. They are now looking for an ex RFA refueller to keep it going at sea when she fire's up her G.T's and goes fast forward, they are also looking for a Dentist and a lower back specialist as moving at 60kt's in anything but a flat calm sea they will reqiure both. Like Billyboy I would still have her given the right number's coming up as she was built and fitted out with the very best of material's at that time.
