Sunk by the RAF on 3 May 1945 with the loss of an estimated 5,000 lives, many supposedly concentration camp inmates being evacuated to Western Germany from East Prussia. One can only wonder what the Nazis had in mind for them if the ship had arrived safely. Of course, the British had no idea who was on board, but assumed the ship was transporting troops.

It did not make any sense to sink this unarmed ship "just for fun" a few days before the end of WW2. Cap Arkona carried concentration camp inmates from Altengamme camp near Hamburg and not from East Prussia. Some of these were anti-Nazi fighters ... Some sources even argued she would carry SS-Nazi elite troops. Like in American literature you can read that the Wilhelm Gustloff carried German SS-Soldiers. What a rubbish.

One remarkable detail: The life boats are made of teak wood and not given any colour, but just clear laquer. The third funnel is a dummy. Behind it is some fenced in tennis or sports court.

My original painting 100x100cm is of course much nicer than this digital photograpgh. I have a special opinion about digital photos. I doubt if those are better than traditional photos. It depends .... Colours in general are a very special subject.
