Canary stevedores called Aberdeen Line ships, "Verdinos" (a much appreciated local breed of big sheepdogs, hence the latin name of the Canary Islands/Canariae Insulae -can/canis = dog), and Blue Funnel ships, "Bufandas" (scarves). The only reason was that English pronunciation of company names sound similar to these two Spanish words.
