Erlangen

This German vessel made a name for herself after doing the bolt from New Zealand during the war.
John Wayne was her skipper in the very distorted movie that was made some years later.

Saw that movie Roy, got it taped somewhere: the Ergenstrasse going home through Royal Navy blockade, captain hating the nazis etc, but I haven't read the factual story. Loosely based?

And what's the background in the picture? Looks like a big town, narrow strait and distinctive landmarks. Sydney? Regards, Stein.

Yes Stein, I think you're right. Certainly looks like she is abeam of Bennelong Point, what was to become the site of the present Opera House.

a little more information on ERLANGEN - She was part of the North German Lloyd fleet when in Dunedin just before the outbreak of WW2, her master Capt Grams was warned by radio that war was imminent and ordered to make his way to a neutral port.
ERLANGEN departed Dunedin with only 5 days coal , cleared outward for Port Kembla in Australia, however he was heading for Chile but had insufficient bunkers, instead sneaked into Carnley harbour in the sub antarctic Auckland Islands south of NZ where the 63 crew stocked up on food (seabirds and shell fish) and cut firewood using saws made from winch guard covers!, they cut and loaded 20 tonnes of wood a day. When re stocked with food and wood, ERLANGEN headed way south to the Latitude 60s where sails were rigged and the ship sailed towards S.America, the officers were sail trained so had no problems sailing the steamship. After 5000nm and 30 days averaging nearly 7knots, crew suffering from beri beri , they were intercepted by HMS NEWCASTLE and sunk, the crew being interned .
A little known great feat of seamanship.
