HMS Avenger

Avenger alongside at Portsmouth, not a regular visitor but she and her sisters were great looking ships!

Out of all the 21's she was the fastest, she had some form of flap fitted at the base of the stern to increase speed by reducing turbulence.

Thanks for the info FG, I only ever saw her and Active in Portsmouth but had to admire the lines. Maybe a lesson for the RN, apparently she is still going after about 45 years service!

They were 'our regulars' at Devonport along with most of the converted Leanders. I used to be very envious of Portsmouth having the destroyers, cruisers and a few of the rare vessels such as type 14's and Cats, however we did have the carriers and amphibs.

Only ever saw one cat FG, saw Lynx in Chatham as part of the RSU, but that was it! Thought they were great looking ships, beautifully balanced design. Seems to have turned round nowadays, Pompey has the carriers but the way things are going you look like having all the Frigates and hopefully retain the amphibs!

I read somewhere, that divers recovered a 20 or 40 mm gun from the sunken HMS Ardent, was mounted on Avenger, and had Ardents Avenger painted on the gunshield.

When I lived in St Budeaux 1974 - 77, Type 21s and Type 12s were the 'norm' in frigate alley Weston Mill Lake. Doubled and tripled up alongside.

I think it was a 20MM and 'Antelopes Avenger' Nick.

You are correct FG, Avenger did trials with two trim tabs temporarily fitted to the transom, which could be adjusted to vary the angle (when alongside only) Very agricultural set-up. This was to prevent the stern from digging in thereby enabling more of the thrust from the Props to be directed aft to push the ship forwards, as opposed to wasting some of the thrust pushing the stern upwards. It was calculated she gained 1.5 knots on her top speed.
