Hudson River

Hudson River

Docked in Blyth opposite Hughes Bolckow Shipbreakers in 1961. Hudson River was built by the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company 1949. Built for the Hudson Steamship Company, she had a gross tonnage of 3,128 tons and was capable of a cruising speed of 11 knots. The Hudson River had the reputation of being the last of the large coal burning colliers on the English coast. In the late 1960's she was converted to oil burning, as good quality bunkering coal was becoming hard to obtain. The noticeable lack of derricks was part of her design, since coal in that period was unloaded by dockside grabs, and this gave them clearance.
You can buy a radio controlled model of this vessel see:

Graham the Berwick arrived at the yard in 1948.
Could it be the Euryalus ? she arrived in 1959.
I think the vessel in front lying behind the "willick"may be the Sunrise she was laid up there in the summer of 59.This would fit in with the date being 1959Only a guess though

I arranged to do a "Holiday Trip" on the Hudson River about summer 1958 while I was doing pre-sea training on HMS Worcester. Dagenham - Blythe - Dagenham, lovely ship, great trip, crew very kind to a "Little ****". Those Oh so quiet engines. I am now building that Radio Control Model of her .... in my retirement.
