JERVIS BAY - delays

JERVIS BAY - delays

JERVIS BAY was the only member of this class for OCL to be British built, the contract going to Upper Clyde Shipbuilders at the Govan yard.
She was plagued with delays and unfortunately ensured that the Clyde missed out on orders for these ships.
This is a press cutting from February 1969.

She was also the first of this class to be scrapped (in 1984) whilst most of the other sailed on until the late 1990's. A sorry tale indeed - the decline of UK shipbuilding is a complex subject brought about by a number of factors not confined to labour troubles. For further information on the building of the Jervis Bay and her Germany-built sisters suggest reading Marshall Meek's (who headed up the design of this class and the later Liverpool Bay-class) autobiography published a couple of years ago.
