Derek, What a great set of photos you have posted.! Capt Sam B and George Black just as I remember them. Peter "Marsden" is not known to me , are you sure it was not C.P. Margeson as c/o ?

It is Peter Margeson ; dont know where I got Marsden ?? I later sailed with Peter when he was Captain and I 2nd or Chief Eng . Also sailed with Sam when I was Chief . Very quick promotion for engineers with Motor Tickets .

Any particular reason why the Old Man and the Mate are wearing plain braid, whereas the Second has standard MN diamonds?

Could it be that the engineers were too tight to buy the more expensive plain braids that were custom sewn on to the sleeve!!!! (only joking)

Did my first trip on "Malancha" when Peter Margeson was Mate and with Sam when he was Mate on "Makrana" from new.

I was in touch again with Sam a couple of years ago via the "Friends Reunited" web
site and he seemed to be enjoying his retirement. There is a Brocklebank "Thread" on Friends Reunited.

Sailed with Sam when he was C/O on the Masirah 62/63. A great mentor to a senior apprentice and aspiring deck officer. Always smoking his pipe filled with a tobacco called "Baby's Bottom"! He had to put up with a lot on that ship as the Master was "Winky Simpson", who was from the old school, and could be quite a challenge at times.

Having not sailed with Brock's and read little I seem to remember that the company were given some sort of Royal Charter for assisting Royalty in the dim and distant past. That being the reason that the House Flag was flown at the Fore. Would this have anything to do with the Braid (No Engineers in Sailing Ships)
Just Ideas...no idea really.................pete

I dont know Pete ? Perhaps some of our Brocklebank members can advise .
I know the engineers always had the diamonds and purple with their braid in Brocklebanks .
Perhaps the mates were to miserable to buy new braid when promoted and just kept adding a plain stripe !
