It would be interesting to have a present day photo from the same spot, if still possible, just to compare any changes. Lovely photo.

Yes, David, it would make an interesting comparison. I looked on Flickr, but I can't see one from the same viewpoint. There are some that show various aspects, but not the whole. Great photo, though, as you say, especially when you consider its age!

George Washington Wilson is a famous early photographer, and doncontrols is very fortunate to have one of his slides. Thanks for that link Scurdie, very interesting old pics of Oban..... no railway pier and no McCaigs tower, but the wee house on the south pier .. the harbour masters house, has been there a very long time, and its little turret on the end, just as it is to this day. great stuff
