Port of Astoria 1965

The ship on the right is undoubtedly a Calmar ship, can't determine which one (either Calmar, Portmar, Seamar, Yorkmar, Marymar, or Pennmar). The ship on the left is a harder ID.

The Calmar ships were C-4's converted for their specific intercoastal use wherein they'd carry steel products from the east coast to the west coast and lumber on the return voyage. They replaced their fleet of Liberty ships which were retired when the C-4's came into service. The company was a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel. They were regular callers at the Richmond Parr 5 terminal in San Francisco Bay.

The vessel in the foreground is the Columbia River lightship which was moored off the bar at the river entrance. These lightships were still in service when I was at sea but were soon replaced by automated buoys. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_lightship_Columbia_(WLV-604)

The Portmar was sold and the new owners renamed her the "Poet" (the "r" was changed to an "e" and the "...mar" was simply painted out). She disappeared with all hands in 1980.
