Smiths Dock Gates

Recent photo of the gates at Smiths Dock with the Wolsington House just behind, now boarded up, the Chain Locker (Crane House Vaults) is now flats, the Jungle has gone, the only pub left is the Porthole, or the Fleece as was when I first frequented the place.

That is such a sad sight, but must be said is mirrored elsewhere in the country.Far rather to remember it when it was a vibrant place & full of people working in the shipping industry.

Blasphemy, or at best a sad lack of knowledge of the finer things!

The Pool, The Jungle, Smiths Docks, and the ferry to South shields, all within a stones throw of each other!

And all in North Shields, of course.

the jungle, shipping federation on the corner, and board of trade offices on the bank have all been converted into appartments( similar to rabbit hutches, very compact) don,t know if anyone remembers Alan Burns who was the last manager in the jungle, he is still around and keeping fine.

I was ten years at sea before i ever managed to get to this area. I joined RFA REGENT here in February 1990 from the Cardiff pool and this was the pub we used for lunch breaks and sneaking off times. First time i entered the "wolly" as we knew it i was amazed to see a load of Newcastle Brown Ale bottles along the bar with half pint schooner like glasses sitting on top of the bottles. The dockies would come in, put a pound on the bar and take a bottle, beat queueing up i guess. Had a bout 4 weeks there if i remember right. Remember the ballerat (Sp) pan shop club, the berwick and i think there was one pub called the colin campbell, didn't go into the latter as there was supposed to be a mad women who turned on people in there.
