Sygna

This is what was left of the stern section of the Sygna in 2001 and I hope it complements the excellent series of photos that depict the grounding and partial salvage of this unfortunate ship. In 2003 the Central NSW coastline and much of Sydney was battered by another storm (but of less intensity than the one which sent the Pasha Bulker ashore) and as a result she lost her funnel and part of the port upper deck.

Gday Phil Thanks for the image of the Sygna, I was wondering are there any images around of Sygna in her heyday before she hit Stockton Beach Newcastle?

Ahoy Bradley, there are a few shots on this site of the Sygna when she hit in 1974 but I'm afriad I don't know of any with the ship sailing in one piece. An old book on Australian shipping has one photo of her stern on in Western Australia but I don't recall the title or author, I'm sorry. She was sailing for seven years before coming to grief so hopefully someone here will have a photo.

I've often wondered if the SYGNA was the only vessel built in halves that ended its career by breaking in two.

A half answer to that question would be the liberty ship Rufus King. It was built in sections (you could say halves) and she ran aground on Moreton Island in 1942 (Queensland,Australia). The stern is still there but the bow was salvaged and used as a barge called...wait for it....Rufus Half.
