Swedish Barque Trifolium at Lands End, owner John E Olsson, Göteborg. She was built in 1875 by Alexander Stephens, and she had a sad end. This from the Wrecksite: History Lockett Graham 20/01/2010 Clive Carter´s "Cornish Shipwrecks, The North Coast" states: Whilst on passage Cardiff to Bahia with coal, bricks and clay the Trifolium was forced to put in to Falmouth to repair a serious leak. After she sailed on the 10th March she was caught in a WNW gale 50 miles off the Lizard, her cargo shifted, flinging her on her beam ends. The barque drifted towards Lands End, where, off Gwynver, her blue flares were spotted by the coastguard. As Captain Olssen attempted to beach her, a breaker swept four men overboard; only the chief mate was dragged back, his leg broken. Captain Olssen was hurled under the break in the poop and killed. The survivors went up the rigging, but the barque´s violent rolling prevented them from securing the rocket lines before she suddenly went to pieces. Six of th e crew managed to claw their way ashore but the second officer was killed by a falling yard. Within an hour only the Trifolium´s poop & forecastle stood intact. ref. used: [1] Lockett Graham [2] Clive Carter, Cornish Shipwrecks Vol 2
