As TAIREA was on the India-Japan run possibly characters on hull spell her name.

The ship shown is TAIREA of British India Line. She had two sister ships TAKLIWA & TALAMA with all operating on service between Bombay & Durban.
TAKLIWA went aground off Great Nicobar Islandm, caught fire and was destroyed. TALAMBA was sunj at Madagascar landing.
TAIREA was built was Barclay Currie in 1924 and had a gross tonnage of

Where do you get them from Blyth spirit!another great historic picture but they are better with tugs in for me.
Being born on the Tyne again this picture is before my time and interesting, but is this looking 'from Blyth' to what is now Battleship wharf? as there is still is some wooden landing stage nearest the camera still existing I think?
Or is it looking 'at Blyth' town from the other side of the river.
I am just trying to understand the history of Blyth and never realized how big some of the ships were.
One good question for all our local experts is what was the biggest vessel to dock in Blyth! was it the one that caught fire?

the Chinese characters were the ships name as close phonetically as they could be represented

These three were the first in the fleet to be registered in London instead of the traditional Glasgow.
TAIREA returned to her original service Calcutta-Japan in 1949 running with the new "S" class but two knots faster than them in service. Presumably they are Japanese characters on the hull.
Cheers, John.
