Rare view of HMT Carmania, photographed at Halifax, Nova Scotia in her dazzle paint, during her trooping duties in the winter of 1917. After defeating the German liner Cap Trafalgar off Trinidad as an AMC in 1914, the ship underwent a period of repair at Gibraltar before returning to patrol duties in November of the same year. She maintained this duty for nearly 2 years before being called up for trooping work in the Gallipoli campaign in 1916. Her primary function in the Mediterranean was to repatriate troops back to England. She was dazzle painted in 1917, as seen here, and continued trooping personal, both Canadian and US, across the Atlantic until wars end. She was a very hard working vessel during the war, and a lucky survivor.
