Lusitania

The four funnels of the Lusitania are seen from above in the summer of 1908, while the ship was docked in New York Harbor. One has to wonder about the vantage point from which the picture was taken. There were no high places on the water front at that time, and the picture is clearly taken from a very high point on the ship's own foremast, well above the crows nest. For a person to get themselves and a bulky glass plate negative style camera that high up on the mast must have been a dangerous undertaking. But it's a remarkable view for it's time, showing the ship boomed out for the loading of coal, as well as the two rows of unique air vents running along her sun deck.

Easy. Camera gear with the photographer in a bosun's chair and would be hoisted him aloft from the foremast topmast. Quite sure this was an 'official' photo and with the help and approval from the ship. Easy. ;-)

Beautiful photo and great details. Shows the simplicity of the details on the deck. No clutter, not like MAURETANIA.

Not the people clustered on the boat deck.

Interesting Stephen, I've never seen the picture before, I never would have guessed it was an official shot.

Look at the amount of the traffic in the North River. You couldn't land a airliner on the river then!

You're right, and most people at that time probably took all that traffic for granted, like it was always going to be there, and yet, most of it would be gone in less than a human lifetime. Such is the march of progress.
