I've always admired the twin sisters, the former Island Princess and Pacific Princess always gained my attention right from the start of their careers when they were built for Flagship Cruises as the Island Venture and Sea Ventura.

They were very attractive looking vessels, very well proportioned with a nice modern funnel. The purchase of the former Flagship Cruises sisters came at an appropriate time and really set the standard for Princess Cruises helping to firmly establish the company as a premium brand cruise line.

The popular U.S. TV show the ''Love Boat'' brought the two ships to a wider audience and was a favourite of mine growing up as there was always great views of the ships

I have seen both sisters on many occasions throughout their careers but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to go onboard either of them something that I thoroughly regret.

Unlike Sean, I never warmed to these sisters. To me they looked top-heavy, with their tall funnel positioned atop an over-abundance of superstructure. But I realize I'm in the minority, as these Love Boats had legions of fans.

Although I made my comments regarding the sisters I have to agree with you in some way and I appreciate what your saying. The one thing that I could comment on is the bow, it looks to low in comparison to her superstructure hence giving them a top heavy look as you've pointed out.

When I was a young lad I had a set of playing cards with ships depicted on the back and one of them was the SEA VENTURE. I had never heard of this ship at the time and it was the incident involving the Sea Venture and the QE2 in 1974 that brought her to my attention and even more so when P&O purchased them both for their recently acquired Princess Cruises brand.

But I have to admit that alot of my interest in these two sisters does have a lot to with watching the LOVE BOAT :)

I must be one of the very few people in the western world that never watched The Love Boat.

I visited her in the early 1970's when she was the Sea Venture, she used to sail out of New York on those 5 - 7 day "booze cruises".

P & O bought the Princess Cruise Line because they did not want to get left behind when the Norwegians were building the newer smaller cruise ships.

It was while working aboard the PRINCESS CARLA (ex-FLANDRE) that Jeraldine Saunders - who died earlier this year at age 96 - began writing the first chapters of 'The Love Boats'. I suffered through a few episodes of the popular TV series, which lent credence to that old adage 'Never under-estimate the taste of the American public'...

I remember in Phase 3 at Riversdale (1983), one of the P&O lads had been on her. When we ragged him about "The Love Boat" he just replied in his thick West Country drawl,"Yeah, really! If octagenarians are your vice!!!"

I believe that, although I stand to be corrected, she was quite hard work for the engineers.
