Rustringen

Rustringen

In 1972, the German coaster Rustringen was involved in a collision on the Thames and sank. The wreck, in two parts, was subsequently raised and beached at East Tilbury. If anyone has further details of the accident, or of the Rustringen, please let me know.

These photos were taken 1/11/80 when the wreck was in the process of being cut up.

Phil,
"Rüstringen " was owned by F. Schwanke of Hamburg & sank in the Thames, about 3 miles off the Isle of Sheppey ,on 11/10/1972 after colliding in a position 51.29N 0.54E with the Dutch Shell tanker " Kylix" . (Built 1955, 12,119 g.t.) during a voyage from Ijmuiden to Dagenham Dock .

One member of her crew was lost.
She was raised on 23/10/1972 and beached off Hole Haven.

Rick

Great information there Rick. I wonder how she got from Hole Haven to being beached by Tilbury Power Station though? I think she had only recently turned up there when Phil and I clambered over her nack in 1980.

Thanks Rick for some excellent info yet again. Yes, I am sure you are right John, she had only recently turned up at Tilbury when we took these photos, so how she got there is a complete mystery.
