S.S. Circassia

This is the Circassia on which many immigrants sailed to the New World. My grandfather's cousin James Abercrombie sailed on it and landed in NY in Nov 1885. At that time (pre Ellis Is) immigrants were processed at Castle Garden ..also called Castle Clinton.

Hi Dave:
A Barrow Steam Ship Co. (50% owned by the Anchor Line, the other half by the shipbuilders) liner built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Co. She was managed by the Anchor Line, worked an Anchor Line route (Glasgow-New York) and was, for all intents and purposes, an Anchor Line ship. I'm not sure when, or if, the Barrow Steamship Co. was disolved and the Anchor Line took complete possession of the Barrow built ships under their management.

1878, 4,250GT, 401' x 42', Iron hull, single screw, compound machinery, 13 knots.
Sistership 'Devonia'.
Scrapped 1900.
