Interesting photo of the old bucket dredger, with her builders being at the time almost the main dredger builders for the world, with many orders world-wide. In practice, the bucket dredger design eventually became slightly inefficient especially for narrow channels/harbours, mainly due to the need for extensive wide-ranging moorings from bow and stern, which allowed them to manoeuvre in a semi-circular motion but restricted passing vessels. This one was finally replaced by the more familiar self-propelled grab dredger of the same name i.e. 'Esk" which was built in 1936 and which was much more flexible when working. Super photo. Looks like plenty of smoke emanating from Fortune's Kippers near the bottom of the steps.
