Adriatic & Olympic

Adriatic & Olympic

In this Percy Loomis Sperr photograph, the Adriatic and Olympic are seen together in New York Harbor in October, 1932. The Adriatic appears to be backing out of her slip at pier 60, and it looks like she’s doing so without the aid of tugs. Notice there are tug boats tied up and just sitting at the end of Pier 60. The original shot is very large, in fact, it almost looks like it was a panoramic image, but I wanted to zoom in on the two White Star liners to get a better view of each. What impressed me most about the picture was the deceiving size of the Adriatic, she looks a lot larger than her 24,000 tons would lead one to believe. Olympic would undergo a major overhaul at the end of this year that had her looking like new upon her return. But this effort would prove to have been in vain, as both ships were nearing the end of their lives by this time, Adriatic has less than two years left in service, and Olympic, despite the overhaul, would be gone in less than three. The Great Depression brought a premature end to many fine ships.
